From USC Athlete to Boxing Recruiter: A Journey of Passion and Purpose

As I reminisce on my journey from USC athlete to boxing recruiter, I’m grateful for the whirlwind of experiences that shaped my path. It all began with a chance connection and a leap of faith—a decision that would not only change my career trajectory but also ignite a passion within me that continues to burn brightly.

Upon finishing my tenure at the University of Southern California, where I played football under the legendary Pete Carroll, I navigated the uncertain terrain of post-collegiate life. Working as a loss prevention security agent at DD’s Discounts, I never could have imagined the adventure that awaited me.

My USC classmate, Jocelyn Leche, introduced me to the world of recruiting through her work with All American Heavyweights—a groundbreaking boxing program helmed by television producer Michael King. The premise was simple yet revolutionary: to cultivate heavyweight fighters from the ranks of former athletes with no prior boxing experience but a wealth of athleticism honed through high-level collegiate and professional sports.

The opportunity was a flight to Los Angeles, a hotel room, and the promise of a $500 check—an offer too intriguing to pass up. Little did I know this decision would set the stage for a transformative journey that would shape my life.

Arriving at the Rock Gym in Carson, CA, I found myself face to face with actor John Voight—an unexpected twist that added an extra layer of excitement to the experience. Alongside fellow college athletes, I embarked on a rigorous workout regimen under the watchful eye of Voight and other luminaries, laying the groundwork for my newfound passion.

But it wasn’t just about the workouts and the checks; it was about the opportunity to unearth raw talent and provide aspiring athletes with a pathway to success. Armed with determination and a laptop, I scoured social media platforms, reaching out to athletes far and wide for the next heavyweight sensation.

As the sole external recruiter for the program, I found myself immersed in a world of elite boxing trainers and former champions, forging bonds that would last a lifetime. Meeting legends like Evander Holyfield only fueled my passion further, reaffirming my belief in the transformative power of sport.

Yet amidst the excitement and adrenaline of recruitment, a more profound purpose was at play. I soon realized that my role extended beyond mere recruitment; it was about providing hope and opportunity to athletes who might otherwise have slipped through the cracks.

Over the years, I had the privilege of recruiting remarkable talents like linebacker Eryk Anders and Gerald Washington, who would go on to achieve success in their respective fields. But beyond the accolades and victories, the impact on individual lives left the most significant impression on me.

Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the countless athletes whose lives were changed by a single opportunity—an opportunity I was fortunate enough to facilitate. This sense of purpose and fulfillment drives me to continue my work, now focusing on high school athletes and their recruiting process.

What began as a quest for financial stability has blossomed into a lifelong passion fueled by the belief that every athlete deserves a chance to shine. As I look ahead to the future, I am filled with hope and excitement for the countless lives yet to be touched by the power of sport.
