Matthew White’s Journey: From Setbacks to Success

The recruiting process can be a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with highs and lows, twists and turns. For running back Matthew White, his journey from high school to college was a whirlwind of challenges and opportunities that ultimately led him to success.

It all began during Matthew’s senior year at Bishop O’Dowd High School, where he showcased his talent on the football field. Despite facing setbacks due to injuries, Matthew remained determined to pursue his dreams of playing college football. However, his recruiting process hit a roadblock when he realized he needed more relationships with college coaches and had minimal interest in Division 1 programs.

As Matthew’s recruiting consultant, I was surprised to discover the lack of attention he had received from college coaches. Despite his talent and potential, he had only Division 3 offers by the end of his senior year. When presented with the opportunity to attend Rocky Mountain College in Montana, I advised Matthew to consider his options carefully, considering his aspirations beyond football.

Despite my suggestion to attend community college and transfer to a school aligned with his interests, Matthew succumbed to external pressure and committed to Rocky Mountain College. However, it soon became clear that the environment and expectations needed to fit him better. Faced with adversity, Matthew made the courageous decision to admit his mistake and pursue a different path.

Together, we devised a plan for Matthew to transfer to community college after his first semester at Rocky Mountain College. By enrolling at the College of San Mateo, Matthew got back on track, gaining playing time and valuable film to showcase his skills.

Through hard work and perseverance, Matthew completed his associate’s degree and earned a walk-on opportunity at Howard University. His journey is a powerful reminder that success is not always immediate, and sometimes it requires patience, resilience, and the willingness to take risks.
Matthew’s story is a testament to the importance of refusing to settle for less than what you deserve, even if it means taking a detour or waiting for the right opportunity. By embracing challenges and staying true to his aspirations, Matthew exemplifies the resilience and determination needed to overcome obstacles and succeed.

As Matthew continues his journey at Howard University, he inspires others facing similar challenges, proving that anything is possible with perseverance and belief in oneself.
