Navigating the Recruitment Journey: A Success Story with Demel Turner
Embarking on the recruitment journey with a promising high school athlete can be both exhilarating and daunting. Yet, when collaboration and support align, remarkable stories like Demel Turner’s emerge—a testament to the power of dedication, talent, and family involvement. I had the privilege of working alongside my friend David Ausberry in guiding Demel Turner through his recruitment process, and it was an experience that left an indelible mark on me.
From the moment David introduced me to Demel and his family during his sophomore year at Lemoore High School in California, it was evident that we were dealing with someone special. Demel’s prowess on the field was matched only by his dedication in the classroom, where he excelled in advanced placement courses—a testament to his discipline and intelligence. But what truly set Demel apart was the unwavering support of his family. With both parents serving in the military, their commitment to Demel’s dreams was palpable, making our job as recruiters significantly easier.
Despite juggling multiple sports and a rigorous academic load, Demel remained focused on his goals. His parents were actively involved in every step of the process, seeking advice and diligently following through on recommendations. This collaborative effort laid the foundation for Demel’s success.
During Demel’s recruitment journey, one standout moment was his San Jose State camp performance. While Demel was impressed on the field, his parents truly stole the show. Armed with transcripts and a QR code showcasing Demel’s achievements, they seized the opportunity to promote their son to college coaches. Their proactive approach not only caught the attention of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo but also earned Demel his first Division 1 offer.
As interest from various colleges, including Ivy League institutions like Yale, poured in, Demel remained grounded in his decision-making process. Despite enticing offers, he ultimately chose Cal Poly SLO, citing proximity and the scholarship opportunity as deciding factors—a choice made with the full support of his family.
Demel’s journey didn’t end with his commitment to Cal Poly SLO; it was just the beginning. As he continues to make strides on the field, his story reminds us of the importance of family involvement in the recruitment process.
Reflecting on my experience with Demel, one lesson stands out: the recruiting process is infinitely smoother when parents are actively engaged and supportive. I continue to uphold this philosophy in my work, advocating for collaboration between student-athletes and their families to successfully navigate the intricate world of college recruitment.
As Demel gears up for another season at Cal Poly SLO, I do not doubt that his unwavering determination and family support will continue to propel him toward success—both on and off the field. His story inspires aspiring athletes and the power of teamwork and perseverance in achieving one’s dreams.
