Unlocking Potential: The Journey of Declan Kilgallen
Working with Declan Kilgallen, a Bishop O’Dowd High School football player, was a remarkable and fulfilling experience. As a sophomore on the JV soccer team, Declan was on my counseling caseload, and his 6’2″, 175 lb frame immediately caught my attention as a potential college prospect. Recognizing his athletic build, I suggested he consider playing football. Initially, Declan was hesitant. He had never played football before and wasn’t sure if his parents would support the idea.
To address his concerns, I contacted his parents, explaining the potential benefits of Declan playing football. Despite their initial resistance, I emphasized his athletic potential and strong academic performance, which could attract attention from high-school colleges. Reluctantly, they agreed to let him give it a try.
I prepared Declan for the challenges ahead, warning him that the transition would be tough but assuring him that he would improve with time and effort. Predictably, his first year was rough—he struggled and faced numerous obstacles. However, as the season progressed, Declan’s determination paid off, and he began to improve significantly.
By his senior year, Declan was fully prepared and knew what to expect on the field. His hard work and dedication culminated in an outstanding season, earning him first-team all-league honors as a defensive back. This recognition sparked interest from colleges, and he received offers from several Division III schools. The University of Chicago, a high-academic Division III college, offered him a spot, and after a campus visit, Declan committed to their program.
Working with Declan taught me a valuable lesson: recognizing and nurturing student-athletes potential can open new opportunities for them. Sometimes, students may not excel in one sport but can thrive in another, leading to unexpected and rewarding paths. Encouraging them to explore these new avenues can significantly boost their chances of getting into a college and achieving their dreams.
Declan’s journey from a hesitant soccer player to a confident and successful football player is a testament to the power of potential and perseverance. By stepping out of his comfort zone and embracing a new challenge, he unlocked opportunities that seemed out of reach, paving the way for a bright future both on and off the field.
